Medicare Supplement Plans all have A+ reviews on coverage and benefits. Medigap plans are standardized, so comparing options is simple. When Medicare approves a claim, the Medigap plan must also pay. Once Medicare pays, then the Medigap plan pays its portion. Below we’ll discuss the reviews for each policy, explain everything the plan covers, and more.

Medigap policy reviews

Unlike Medicare Advantage Part C, there aren’t star ratings for Medigap policies. However, some Medicare Supplements cover more than others. For example, Plan G covers more than Plan N.

First, let’s take a look at your Medigap plan options.

Medicare Supplement insurance plan options

Every Medigap plan deserves an A+ rating because of the benefits and coverage. All these plans allow you to see any doctor that accepts Medicare, and you don’t need a referral for a specialist. Three states don’t follow the Medicare standardization rules.

MA residents must choose from one of three Massachusetts Medigap options. In Wisconsin, Medigap plans have a base plan that residents can add riders to make the coverage more robust. Minnesota Medicare Supplement plans have a basic plan to which you can add riders for enhanced coverage, or residents can choose one of the MN preset Medigap choices.

  • Plan A
  • Plan B
  • Plan C
  • Plan D
  • Plan F
  • Plan G
  • Plan K
  • Plan L
  • Plan M
  • Plan N

Now, let’s go over each Medigap plan and its reviews.

Medicare Supplement Plan A reviews

Medigap Plan A is an A+ policy. This plan covers basic benefits; it’s a minimum coverage option.

Plan A covers 100% of the Medicare Part A inpatient coinsurance costs and outpatient Part B coinsurance. This policy will cover the first three pints of blood. Also, you’ll have coverage for Part A hospice care.

Medicare Supplement Plan B reviews

Plan B isn’t the same as Medicare Part B. Medigap plan B is an A+ rated policy that fills some gaps in Original Medicare.

Medicare Plan B covers the same as Plan A but includes the Part A deductible.

Medicare Supplement Plan C reviews

Medigap Plan C is one of the most popular options, with an A+ rating. Plan C is considered one of the most comprehensive plans available to Medicare beneficiaries.

Medical benefits covered by Plan C include:

  • Part A deductible and coinsurance
  • Part B deductible and coinsurance
  • First three pints of blood
  • Skilled Nursing Facility coinsurance
  • Foreign travel emergency

Plan C doesn’t cover any applicable Part B excess charges. Medigap Plan C is only available to beneficiaries eligible for Medicare before 2020.

Medicare Supplement Plan D reviews

Medigap Plan D is a popular supplement plan with an A+ rating. Plan D isn’t the same as Medicare Part D; Part D covers prescription drugs, and Plan D is a Medigap policy.

This plan covers the same benefits as Plan C, but Plan D doesn’t cover the Part B deductible. Also, like Plan C, Plan D doesn’t cover Part B’s excess charges.

Medicare Supplement Plan F reviews

Medigap Plan F has an A+ rating and is one of the most popular Medicare Supplement plans. Plan F is the most comprehensive healthcare, but you must be eligible for Medicare before 2020 to qualify.

Medicare Supplement Plan F covers:

  • Part A deductibles and coinsurances
  • Part B deductibles and coinsurances
  • Part B excess charges
  • First 3 pints of blood
  • Part A hospice coinsurance
  • Skilled Nursing Facility coinsurance
  • Foreign travel emergency

Many beneficiaries choose this policy because there are no out-of-pocket costs. Suppose you’re comfortable paying the deductible in a worst-case scenario. In that case, high-deductible Plan F is a great alternative to save money on your monthly premium.

Medicare Supplement Plan G reviews

Medigap Plan G is one of the top supplement plans with an A+ rating. Plan G is just like Plan F, except you’ll pay the Part B deductible out of pocket.

Often, beneficiaries choose Plan G because paying the Part B deductible saves more money per year in premiums than Plan F costs. Beneficiaries eligible for Medicare after 2020 will find this is the most comprehensive policy available.

There is a high-deductible Plan G option available.

Medicare Supplement Plan K reviews

Medigap Plan K is a cost-sharing policy that has an A+ rating. This policy’s benefits will appeal to some, but sometimes it’s the most suitable policy.

Medicare Supplement Plan K covers the following:

  • Part A coinsurance
  • 50% of the Part A hospice coinsurance
  • 50% of the Part A deductible
  • 50% of the Part B coinsurance
  • 50% of the first 3 pints of blood
  • 50% of the Skilled Nursing Facility coinsurance

Plan K doesn’t cover the Part B deductible, Part B excess charges, or foreign travel emergency. There is an out-of-pocket maximum on Plan L. Once you reach the limit, the plan pays 100% of Medicare-covered services for the rest of the calendar year.

Medicare Supplement Plan L reviews

Like all Medigap plans, Plan L is an A+ option. Similar to Plan K, Plan L is a cost-sharing plan.

Medigap Plan L covers the following:

  • Part A coinsurance
  • 75% of the Part A hospice coinsurance
  • 75% of the Part A deductible
  • 75% of the Part B coinsurance
  • 75% of the Skilled Nursing Facility coinsurance
  • 75% of the first 3 pints of blood

Plan L doesn’t cover the Part B deductible, Part B excess charges, or emergency travel. This policy has an out-of-pocket limit; once you reach the limit, the plan pays 100% of covered services.

Medicare Supplement Plan M reviews

Medigap Plan M is an A+ policy option. The coverage on Plan M is unique and comparable to Plan D.

Medicare Supplement Plan M covers the following:

  • Part A coinsurance
  • Part A hospice coinsurance
  • 50% of the Part A deductible
  • Part B coinsurance
  • First 3 pints of blood
  • Skilled Nursing Facility coinsurance
  • Foreign Travel Emergency

Plan M doesn’t cover the Part B deductible or excess charges. This policy is an excellent lower-premium option for beneficiaries that can cover out-of-pocket medical expenses.

Medicare Supplement Plan N reviews

Medigap Plan N is a popular option with an A+ rating. This plan is excellent for beneficiaries who want a low premium without forfeiting benefits.

Plan N is the same coverage as Plan D, except you’ll pay copays with Plan N. You’ll pay a copayment for primary care office visits, which is $20. Emergency room visit copays are $50 when there’s no admission to the hospital.

As long as you’re comfortable with the small copays that apply to enrollees of this plan, this is an excellent insurance policy.

FAQ’s

The top 5 Medicare Supplement plans are Plan G, Plan N, Plan F, Plan D, and Plan C. Depending on your situation, some plans may be more suitable for you than others.

Is a Medigap plan more beneficial than a Medicare Advantage plan?

Medicare Supplement plans are more beneficial when you have health problems or ongoing health issues since out-of-pocket expenses are low. With a Medigap policy, you can see any doctor who accepts Medicare and never needs a referral for specialists. Your service area is the entire United States of America. Some Medigap plans even cover foreign travel emergencies. On the other hand, Part C plans have a low monthly premium with higher out-of-pocket costs. With Part C, you must see in-network providers, obtain referrals, and stay within the plan’s service area. There are some negatives to Part C, but some insurance is always better than none.

Why should I choose a Medigap plan?

A Medicare Supplement policy covers the cost of Medicare deductibles, coinsurances, and copayments that Original Medicare doesn’t pay. Medigap insurance coverage lowers medical expenses, and many plans cover additional benefits.

When should I enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan?

While you can enroll in a Medigap plan anytime, your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period is the best time to signup. During this enrollment period, you qualify for guaranteed issue rights. Another time you’re eligible for guaranteed issue rights is during a Special Enrollment Period. Outside of these enrollment periods, pre-existing conditions can affect your eligibility.
